If you use the Windows Google Talk client, you will soon start seeing notifications that Google is retiring the client in February of 2014. The M+Google team recommends switching to Google+ Hangouts chat at this time. Google+ Hangouts chat offers better support for devices (including mobile devices), group conversations, images, and locations.

How long will I be able to use Google Talk through the Google Talk client for Windows?
Connections from the Google Talk client to Google Talk will continue to operate for the first two months of 2014. You may continue to see the deprecation warning in the client during this time. After this period has elapsed, the client will be unable to connect to the Google Talk service.

How can I continue to access Google Talk outside of Gmail?
You can continue to use Google Talk through Gmail on the web or through third-party clients. If you upgrade to the Google+ Hangouts chat service, you can use the Hangouts Google Chrome extension to chat from the desktop.
