Google is launching changes to the structure of Docs editor URLs in order to assist with the Google Docs editors when signed in to multiple accounts. Docs editor URLs will no longer use the /a/DOMAIN format and instead use a /u/ format. Current URLs will continue to work after this change. If a user clicks on an old URL, they will be directed to the new structure without having to do any additional work. Note that users might see /a/DOMAIN included in the Doc editor URLs for approximately a week after the launch.
Google is making this change to ensure Doc editors will be able to select which account to use when logged in on multiple accounts. The Doc editors will be able to select the appropriate account by examining all logged in account sessions and selecting the first one with view access without asking the users to specify which account to use. Google plans to make enhancements in the future that will enable them to lift the one account per domain restrictions currently imposed while using Docs editors. We expect to see this change in the UMICH domain in the next four weeks. While Google is not anticipating any disruptions as a result of this change, the lead time should be used to make any necessary adjustments.
